虎头帽 (hǔ tóu mào) is a heartwarming story about passing cultural heritage and family traditions down through generations. A tiger head hat connects hearts from East to West in a Chinese American family.
黄小虎(huáng xiǎo hǔ, little tiger) lost another baseball match and felt upset. He spotted an old tiger head hat that once belonged to his dad, 大虎(dà hǔ, big tiger), when he was a child. Little Tiger decided he would wear it for "good luck”. As 小虎 wears the hat, dad recalls the good times he had when he wore the hat as a kid. Dad sends a picture of 小虎 in the hat to his parents in Fujian China. The grandparents learn that 小虎‘s team won a baseball game when he wore the hat, and his teammates thought the hat was very cool! They decide to make tiger head hats for the whole team. The team receives the hats and wins every game they play!
In Chinese culture, the tiger symbolizes courage, might, leadership and health. Older Chinese family members often give tiger head hats as gifts to newborn babies to convey their wish of good health and prosperity.
