Acclaimed Japanese author and illustrator Tatsuya Miyanishi 宫西达也 has delighted over 10 million children with these popular Tyrannosaurus 恐龙 (kǒng lóng) books. The Chinese version of these Tyrannosaurus books are the top 10 best sellers in mainland China, and a number of books in the series are among the top 100 most frequently read stories by Luka, the children's picture book reading companion.
If you only focus on the illustrations, you may be fooled in to thinking that Tatsuya's stories are so popular with kids because they appear to be ordinary stories with rudimentary illustrations about violent dinosaurs. Upon closer examination of the titles and the text however, you will realize that these books' wild popularity is actually the result of heartwarming stories about love, forgiveness, making friends, and finding one's own identity.
Unlike typical " happily-ever-after" children's stories, Tatsuya Miyanishi's stories often have "sad" endings. Dinosaur friends can go hungry, struggle, misunderstand each other and pass away. The dramatic and sophisticated storytelling is so divergent from the American children's literature norm that it not only captures the attention of little dinosaur fans, but all young hearts craving good stories.
What reviewers are saying about the English editions of these books:
A summary of one of the stories:
In 《永远永远爱你》I Will Love You Forever, a female Maiasaura finds a lost egg in the forest and decides to look after it as her own. As the eggs begin to hatch, she is surprised to find a baby Tyrannosaurus hatching from the mystery egg. The kindhearted mother accepts the baby T-Rex and raises him as her own son, 良太. One day, when 良太 goes to pick berries he encounters another Tyrannosaurus, and the adopted son of the Maiasaura discovers his real identity.
