Momma, Let’s Buy Green Peas! 妈妈买绿豆 (mā mā mǎi lǜ dòu)
This charming portrayal of a simple mother-son errand may be one of the most nostalgic Chinese children’s books we’ve found.
“阿宝 (ā bǎo) likes going with mom to buy groceries. Every time he goes, he says: ‘Momma, buy green peas!’ “
阿宝’s neighborhood will be familiar to anyone who has spent time in urban Asia—as he goes from the shop where the vendor scoops & weighs the dried beans, to the taiyaki street food stall where the fish-shaped cakes are handled with a stick, (reluctantly) past the toy shop with the toy swords hanging on the wall, we feel transported to his hometown. Then, we are lucky enough to witness the family green bean ritual: soaking the beans, boiling them, adding the sugar & making the soup, savoring the soup on the doorstep, and finally making popsicles! But wait, there was one bean left out! What should he do?
Is my child ready for this set?
