市场街最后一站 Last Stop on Market Street

The book follows a young boy named 小杰(xiǎo jié), as he learns to appreciate the simple beauty in everyday life and everyday people during a bus ride with his grandmother Nana. The tender, wise and playful conversations between 小杰 and Nana hold valuable life lessons for young readers.

Imagination can change a less perfect world.
小杰: "How come we gotta wait for the bus in all this wet?"
Nana: "Trees get thirsty, too. Don't you see that big one drinking through a straw?"

The most precious things in life need not be expensive
小杰: "How come we don't have a car?"
Nana: "Boy, what do we need a car for? We got a bus that breathes fire, and old Mr. Dennis, who always has a trick for you?"

Respect and acceptance of different abilities
小杰: "How come that man can't see?"
Nana: "Boy, what do you know about seeing? Some people watch the world with their ears."

妈妈的红沙发 A Chair for My Mother

Rosa's mom works at a diner. Every day when she gets home from work put the coins they earned that day into a big jar to save up for a big comfortable chair.  They need to save for a new chair because all of the furniture in their old apartment was destroyed by a fire. Although their friends and new neighbors were very generous to provide them with all sorts of other furniture and household items, they did not yet have a comfortable chair or sofa. One day, the big jar is filled to the top, they take it to the bank to exchange the coins for bills and then they go shopping to find the perfect chair!

Sharing/ Contributing

When Rosa gets paid for helping out in the diner... "every time, I put half of my money into the jar."

Gratitude in the face of tragedy

When the neighbors help furnish the new apartment after the fire Rosa's grandmother gives a speech..." 'You are all the kindest people,' she said,'and we thank you very, very much. It's lucky we're young and can start all over.'"
