Luka® can read this book!
This set which contains three stories about influential black American leaders would make a great addition to any home or Mandarin Immersion classroom library. Each story begins during the leader's childhood and highlights a lesson that he learned which influenced his later achievements.
In Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (发光的孩子 fā guāng de hái zǐ), we learn about the childhood of the Brooklyn-born artist and the influence of the trips he took with his Puerto Rican born mother to the art museum as well as jazz music albums his Haitian father used to play in their home.
In Salt in His Shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of His Dream (鞋子里的盐 xié zǐ lǐ dí yán), we learn about how young Michael wished so much that he could be taller in order to better compete on the neighborhood basketball court against his older brothers' friends. His mom comforted him and gave him some advice to help him grow, but his dad reminded him that practice and hard work were more likely to help him succeed than a few extra inches.
In Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr (我有一个梦想 wǒ yǒu yī gè mèng xiǎng), we learn how a young MLK took lessons from his parents and the bible and translated them into action as he led the civil rights movement.
Good to know: Although the Michael Jordan and Jean-Michel Basquiat books in this set use relatively common language children would hear in daily life, the MLK book uses more elevated literary language.
