Adventure, suspense, and action conveyed through exciting illustrations make this series hard for young readers to put down! This is a rare original Chinese comic book series about the love and friendship that help two kids persist despite the hardships of war imposed upon them.
丫丫历险记 (yā yā lì xiǎn jì) is a series of children's comic books jointly developed by a team of Chinese and French artists and writers in 2015. It was the winner of 9 international comic book awards!
Five-year-old Ya Ya lived a privileged life in Shanghai until August 1937, when Chinese-Japanese military activities intensified in Shanghai. Ya Ya, a dedicated and proud pianist who was eager to attend a recital, was separated from her parents while bombs fell in the city. She met 土豆 ( tǔ dòu, potato), a homeless orphan who became her friend and started a mission to help her reunite with her family.
The "bad person" in this story, a grownup man who fed his greed for money by preying on homeless children, may seem surprisingly harsh to western readers. This story, however, marks a dark period in China when a worrisome number of orphans lived on the street and worked as pick-pockets or in other capacities for adults that took advantage their vulnerability. The situation was dire during a war that was tearing families apart.
With world-class storytelling, illustration and character development, these books fascinate young Chinese readers. If you are having trouble finding original Chinese books that excite your child, this is the set. The stories are full of action and suspense and provide a great backdrop for parents and children to learn about and discuss Chinese society during the war between China and Japan in the 1940s.
The word bubbles are short and use simple everyday language, making these comic books a wonderful set for an older child who is learning to read Chinese.
Parents need to know:
