野葡萄 (yě pú táo)  Wild Grapes is a children’s literature gold medal winner in China, this book by famed Chinese writer 葛翠琳 and artist 吴儆芦 has been loved by 3 generations of Chinese families.  

Once in an ancient Chinese village lived a precious little girl with the most beautiful big eyes. When her parents died, her aunt took over her home & forced her to sleep outside with a group of white geese. People then called her 白鹅女 “White Goose Girl”. When her aunt gives birth to a blind baby girl, she grows ever more jealous when she hears people marvel over 白鹅女’s beautiful eyes. One day, when the aunt goes to collect goose eggs by the river, she throws a handful of sand into白鹅女 ‘s face, blinding her. 白鹅女 recalls that her late mother told her that, deep in the mountains is a special kind of wild grape that can restore vision to the blind. One goose guides her to the deep mountains. After a treacherous journey, she falls off a cliff and is caught by the wild grape vine! She eats the grapes and is able to see again! The mountain god comes to her and offers her diamonds to stay, but she is determined to bring the grapes back to her village to cure other blind people.  In the end, she brings light to many-- including her little cousin.
