洗个不停的妈妈 (xǐ gè bú tíng de mā mā) Washing Crazy Ma is a hilarious story about a Japanese folktale and a mom who is not to be messed with.
Mom loves to wash. One day, after she’s washed everything inside the house, she asks her kids to find something else to wash. Knowing what’s coming, the kids and pets run away but their efforts are thwarted and they are washed clean! As mom hangs everything and everybody on the lines to dry, their bare belly buttons attract a thunder god. (Japanese kids are told to cover up their belly buttons during thunderstorms, because the thunder god Raijin is said to have an insatiable appetite for navels! ) Mom washes Raijin clean and the kids paint him a handsome face. When mom washes again, thousands of thunder gods come down for a wash!
This truly memorable and slightly outrageous story is a great way to introduce kids to different cultures via a folktale and a daily routine so common in places.
