克里克塔 (kè lǐ kè tǎ) Crictor is originally published in 1958 by famed French author Tomi Ungerer and subsequently featured on “Reading Rainbow”. It is an adorable story about an unlikely hero.
There was once an old lady named Madame Bodot who lived in a small French town. She had one son who lived in Africa and studied reptiles. One day, she received an O-shaped package. It was a birthday gift from her son-- a snake! She went to the zoo to find out if the snake was poisonous. She learned that it was not, but that it was a Boa Constrictor. She decided to call it “Crictor” for short. She treated the snake like her own child: giving him milk, helping him grow, knitting him a sweater, etc. When she took him on errands, people were shocked that she had a snake as a pet. Since she was a teacher, she took Crictor to school where he was able to manipulate his body to form the letters & numbers and enjoy playing with her students. One day, Madame Bodot heard about a series of burglaries in the community. That night, after a burglar broke-in to her apartment & captured Madame Bodot, Crictor captured the burglar and saved his loyal owner’s life. For his bravery, the community presented him with an award, a statue, and a park named after him. He went on to live a long & happy life in a community of people who loved him!
