A collection of classic tales from beloved author and artist Beatrix Potter, The Tales of Peter Rabbit and Other Friend is now available in simplified Chinese! Since the first Peter Rabbit book was published in August 1902 , it, along with the Beatrix Potter's other works, has stood as a shining example of great children's literature.
Each book in this set contains either one long story or a series of short tales about Peter Rabbit, the Flopsy Bunnies, Mr. Tod the Fox, Tom Kitten, and others. Masterful storytelling draws children to a sophisticated and fascinating world of animals and their triumphs and tribulations. Every page contains at least one small illustration. The amount of text on each page varies between 2 and 14 lines--erring toward the latter. It is a perfect reading level before introducing a child to chapter books.
This set is quite substantial as each book is 46 pages long. Although it may sound intimidating, this set will motivate a child who is a fluent reader of "leveled readers" to take their reading to the next level.
Pinyin above the text helps budding readers by allowing them to look up unknown characters, or guess the meaning of words they may have heard, but never seen before. The Pinyin in this set of books is much smaller than the Chinese text, encouraging children to focus on the Chinese text, and not over-rely on Pinyin while reading.
The "uncommon" vocabulary in this set consists mostly of the translated names. Although transliterated names can be difficult for young learners to grasp initially, some language immersion teachers recommend using names to help familiarize young learners with Chinese characters that they will encounter later. Although a phonetically translated name may seem to be irrelevant as a "word", each Chinese character in the name is usually a common character that a Chinese speaker needs to know. This Peter Rabbit book series highlights names in bold, red font, making them easier for less-experienced readers to identify.
