This wildly popular 顽皮小公主 (wán pí xiǎo gōng zhǔ) The Naughty Little Princess Chinese series from the UK brilliantly portrays daily dramas familiar to toddlers everywhere (and their parents). Since the release of the book in 1986, the series has been adapted for television and currently has 2 of its 3 seasons available on Amazon Prime in the U.S. (only in English, unfortunately!).
Written and illustrated by Tony Ross (the illustrator of the Horrid Harry series ), the series was inspired by the daily life of Ross' own daughter when she was a toddler.
The vocabulary in this Chinese translation of the series is plentiful, but it is chock full of useful phrases from daily life such as "她要小马桶 tā yào xiǎo mǎ tǒng (She wants her potty )!". These types of sentences repeat several times in the hilarious stories making them ideal for budding readers to start recognizing some of their first sentences.
The stories also involve a revolving group of characters that will also help your child become familiar with some more advanced language! See list below.
小公主:xiǎo gōng zhǔ:the little princess国王:guó wáng:the king
王后:wáng hòu:the queen
首相:shǒu xiāng:the prime minister
将军:jiāng jūn:the general
海军上将:hǎi jūn shàng jiāng:the admiral
女仆:nǚ pú:the maid
医生:yī shēng:the doctor
厨师:chú shī:the cook
园丁:yuán dīng:the gardener
Although the style and tone of the books are not for everyone (you can find some reviewers on Amazon who are upset about how the Potty book ends), the vast majority of reviewers on both American and Chinese sites say their little ones love these books.
Also, our initial response from our testers was EXTREMELY positive. One of the moms (a native Chinese speaker who is just introducing character learning to her 4 year old daughter) called us raving about how much her daughter loved these books and how quickly she memorized them and even wanted to start writing some of the phrases down.
