This adorable series, beautifully translated from the original French version, follows the hilarious and action-packed adventures of a group of chickens. With 50 million copies sold in China, the chicken characters including 卡梅拉 (kǎ méi lā) have become beloved household names.
Every page contains at least one small full-color illustration, but several pages are completely illustrated. The amount of text on each page varies between 2 and 13 lines. It is a perfect reading level before introducing a child to chapter books.
This set is quite substantial as each book is 48 pages long. Although it may sound intimidating, this set will motivate a child who is a fluent reader of "leveled readers" to take their reading to the next level.
Pinyin above the text helps budding readers by allowing them to look up unknown characters, or guess the meaning of words they may have heard, but never seen before.

Good to know:
Choosing from the many different versions of the Les P'tites Poules book sets on the market can be confusing. We highly recommend this particular 15-book set with Pinyin, versus the 12-book sets without Pinyin (on sale on Amazon). Pinyin adds support for and builds confidence of budding Chinese readers, and the 15-book Pinyin set we recommend here has larger pages and font sizes for children's developing eyes. Also, it is printed on high quality glossy paper.
In theory, you may scan a QR code on the back of the books to access the publisher's own audio book recordings. However, we found it difficult to use: first, the QR code is not linked to a specific book but a website, and you will have to navigate among lists of books to find the right story; second, you must have a WeChat account to access the website; and third, you must be able to read Chinese to navigate the website.
Option to pair with Luka:
Set Luka in front of a book, and it will read aloud any random page your child turns to. Each Les P'tites Poules book takes Luka about 25 minutes to read page by page. Luka will really be helpful for busy parents who are wrestling to find time to read with their children as they gravitate towards longer book reading sessions. Luka creates a unique, independent physical book reading experience even if your child can't read by herself yet.
There is, however, one minor issue parents should be aware: for certain Les P'tites Poules books in this set, Luka may read one or two phrases differently from what's shown on the pages. This is because Luka's existing audio book files are based on an earlier edition of the books sets. Nevertheless, the word-for-word discrepancy occurs so rarely that children may hardly notice.
Looking for a gift to your children that is both cool and educational? Consider Luka!
In total, Luka reads 30,000 Chinese children's picture books and 6,000 English Children's books. Click to read our founders' personal review of Luka here.
