小莉的中秋节 Xiao Li’s Full Moon Festival

A culturally rich story about the Mid-autumn Festival or Full Moon Festival,  celebrated in Asian countries including Korea, China and Vietnam.

Two days before the Festival (on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar), 小莉 (Xiǎo Lì) ’s family joins the masses of people traveling from large cities to their hometowns to visit family and pay respects to their ancestors. Warmly received into her grandmother’s home, 小莉 becomes awash in festival traditions: 茶礼(chá lǐ, ancestor memorial services with food offerings), 扫墓(sǎo mù, family visit to the ancestral graves), and a dancing parade.

Detailed illustrations vividly portray Korea in the late 20th century, giving a window into a culture that, despite modernizing, still witnessed millions of people making semiannual pilgrimages away from city homes to celebrate tradition in their ancestral homes.

月亮先生 Moon Man

This beautiful and timeless classic by celebrated French author Tomi Ungerer offers a unique take on lunar imagination.

The friendly Moon Man, pale and soft, leaves his “shimmering seat in space”, catches the “fiery tail” of a passing comet, and lands on earth to partake in the jubilation of earthlings which he has longingly observed for ages. Unfortunately, when he arrives on earth, he finds himself vilified by authority figures who feel threatened by the unfamiliar.

Moon Man's dream of dancing with earthlings crumbles when he is put in jail. Luckily, his special lunar powers allow him to escape. After 2 weeks in hiding, once again, he becomes whole and finally enjoys a night of dancing. However, the authorities are still in pursuit, so he ultimately retreats home thanks to the help of a rocket scientist!
